Natural Disasters

My Last Post?

With an inviting coastline and 71 degrees average temperature, San Diego is a wonderful place to live...just so long as the whole thing doesn't crack off the continent one day and slip into the ocean. Is that happening this week?

Fires Update: St Michaels by the Sea, Carlsbad

This update about impact of the recent wildfires comes from Fr. Doran Stanbaugh, Curate at St Michaels, Carlsbad. http://www.stmichaelsbythesea.org. Specific names have been removed from this update, received by email earlier today.

Like most parishes, we have our fare share of those who were displaced during that week, as well as some close calls for parishioners in Fallbrook and Rancho Bernardo. However, we did have one parish family in Rancho Bernardo lose their home.... Also, the gentleman who has worked on our organs at St. Michael's lost his entire home and organ workshop.... I believe his home was in Fallbrook. Those are the two tragic stories from St. Michael's.

Pray for Recovery and Rebuilding Efforts

Got up to Rancho Bernardo yesterday to help my cousin begin cleaning up from the wildfires that took out everything on his property except, thank God, the house. This was the first I've been able to get into these restricted areas to have a direct look at the damage. Simply unbelievable.

Do continue to pray for the safety of those just getting started with cleanup and rebuilding. Between the chipper, half-a-dozen chainsaws, and a Bob Cat operating on a very soft hillside, we had more than one near misses clearing trailer after trailer of downed trees and rubble from the burned out garage.

The dust and soot is the worst part by far. Even wearing a high-quality NIOSH approved painters mask on a relatively calm day, my lips and nasal passages were burning well into the night from whatever is in the air. Nasty nasty work. Chainsawing and hauling wood for about 6 hours gave me renewed appreciation for all those firefighters who were asked to do the same or worse for 24 and 36 hour shifts with fires raging all around them. God bless em.
