Two Important Essays Brought To Mind By Recent Conversations with Low Church Friends

As I've enjoyed more than a couple conversations recently with younger men coming out of lower churches to embrace more traditional understandings of liturgy, and as I have also had the occasion recently of watching long-time Episcopalians/Anglicans sliding into lower and lower forms of "accessible" worship, I thought I'd post a couple of important essays here which have helped me understand and appreciate some of the more opaque but fundamental aspects of our Anglican way of praising God.

It can be so easy to abandon that which we don't understand.  Similarly, it can be so difficult to be enthusiastic and evangelical about things which aren't obvious and immediately grasped.  (read more...)

What Does Bishop Mathes Mean by "Outward and Visible Signs"?

Bishop Mathes, help me understand something.

As a member of the Task Force on Property Issues, along with Bishop Jon Bruno of Los Angeles and Bishop Mark Andrus, you signed a recent document published by that group which says,

We are sacramental people who believe in the importance of "outward and visible signs."...

In the very next line of the very same paragaph, a connection is implied between that belief and the contemporary situation of physical and financial assets long owned, maintained, and cherished by the bishop, congregations, and parishioners of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.  (read more...)
